As some of you know, my full time job is not being an author, although one day if it was possible, I would in a heartbeat.
My full time job is being a social worker. Not many people realize what it means to be a social worker. My first time hearing the word "social worker" is when Lilo from Lilo and Stitch meets Cobra Bubbles and she says, "Cobra Bubbles... you don't look like a social worker" and he answers "I'm special classification." I mean it is one of my favorite Disney movie.
Sooner in life, I came to find more about social work that made me figure out that I found my field of study.
I found that social work, you can wear many "hats", and be in many different types of populations. In social work, we are agents of change, advocates, injustice fighters, therapists, testers, family preservers, data collectors, child defenders, and even educators. Social workers hold the values of strengths based approach, integrity, empathy, love, honesty, and support. Social work allows me and my ADHD to not have every day be the same.
Unfortunately, I can't speak for all social workers because I know the systems we have and some, NOT ALL, may not be the perfect fits. But I can speak for myself and I would and have fought tooth and nail for clients and most recently my patients.
My day to day is working in a children's' hospital and I have loved every minute of it. So my day to day sometimes takes a lot of my energy and focus off of writing and being an indie author that is okay. I'm in the hospital between eight to four and by the time I get home it's 5:00pm which means I need to think about dinner, taking care of the dogs, and even think about a gym night because how else are these thick thighs in my bell bottoms suppose to maintain. :) By the time I sit down and write, my mind is telling me sleep is needed.
So when I have time in between tasks, I take the opportunity and WRITE.
I'm sure that I'm not the only author that isn't writing full time, but when I do see those like me but see that they have more drive, I can't shake the feeling of envy. I strive to put out more stories because as a social worker I strive to help those that need it and want it as well, which means the more stories I put out with resources, the more they get out there.
It doesn't happen overnight and I understand.
But I do hope that one day my stories with the resources in the back will help someone someday.
I would love to have more stories out during the year. Maybe one day.
